These observations have prompted thoughtful dialogue between theological scholars who recognize potential spiritual dimensions and marine scientists pursuing naturalistic explanations. As we witness these remarkable oceanic phenomena, we might respectfully consider an ancient question: Could these events relate to Leviathan, the powerful sea creature described in Scripture? Might these marine anomalies potentially align with prophetic narratives that suggest approaching eschatological events?
Biblical scholars have extensively studied Leviathan, a formidable sea creature mentioned in various ancient religious texts (Rugnetta, 2017; Sinister Narratives, 2024). According to Scripture, this creature is so terrifying that even the mightiest ocean predators may flee from it (Rugnetta, 2017). Leviathan appears prominently in the Torah and Bible, particularly in Job 41, Psalms, and Isaiah (Rugnetta, 2017). It is also referenced in the Quran as “Nun,” and parallels can be found in Hindu texts describing cosmic sea serpents that will emerge during end times (Rugnetta, 2017). In Norse mythology, the similar Jörmungandr (Midgard Serpent) encircles the entire world and is prophesied to cause catastrophic floods during Ragnarök (Rugnetta, 2017).
Modern investigations have uncovered startling information about this ancient entity. In a classified operation known as “Operation Leviathan” initiated in 1967, NASA and the United States Navy reportedly deployed fourteen specialized vessels to investigate unusual vibrations and unidentified sounds emanating from the Pacific Ocean depths (White, 2024; All Mythology, 2024; Monster, 2025). According to leaked documents disclosed by Michael Thomas, a former employee who disclosed many NASA’s classified files, researchers detected an enormous entity in 1969 measuring approximately 5,000 kilometers in length—a scale that defies conventional understanding of marine life (Monster, 2025). The creature’s existence was subsequently classified, with mission participants required to sign confidentiality agreements (Monster, 2025). These cross-cultural references and alleged modern encounters suggest the immense significance and scale of this creature believed to dwell in the ocean depths. Some researchers propose that the recent unusual behavior of marine life, including mass beachings and fish appearing in shallow waters, could be connected to disturbances caused by such a leviathan‑like presence (Aldos, 2024; Blakwoodz, 2025).
In the Bible, Leviathan is depicted as a fearsome, untamable creature that no human power can control. In Job 41:1, God challenges Job by asking, "Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook or tie down its tongue with a rope?". This powerful imagery is further developed in Psalm 74:14, which recounts how God crushed Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the wilderness. In Isaiah 27:1, a prophecy foretells that "on that day the Lord with His relentless, large, strong sword will bring judgment on Leviathan, the fleeing serpent...".
The description in Job 41 is both awe-inspiring and terrifying, portraying Leviathan with impenetrable scales, fearsome teeth, and even the ability to breathe fire and spew smoke—qualities setting it apart from ordinary marine creatures. Its power is such that "no sword, spear, dart, javelin, arrow, stone, club, or lance can defeat it" (Job 41:26–29).
Some scholars interpret Leviathan both literally and symbolically. While some suggest it could be a type of crocodile or extinct sea creature, others view it as an allegory for uncontrollable natural forces and the embodiment of evil (GotQuestions.org, 2022). Commentary from Christianity.com suggests Leviathan symbolizes powers opposing God (Christianity.com, 2020).
For many, Leviathan represents chaos and uncontrollable power—forces that only God can master. With recent phenomena where deep-sea creatures continue to appear offshore, many people have speculated that this could be one of the reasons these fish are actually coming ashore. Could Leviathan be coming offshore?
Recent reports from around the globe have drawn striking parallels with these ancient texts. In New Zealand’s Oki Bay, for example, an engineer spotted a massive, mysterious wake while browsing Google Earth. Some have interpreted this as evidence of a creature roughly 12 meters in length lurking beneath the surface (Deccan Chronicle, 2014; AOL, 2014).
Yet other investigations, such as those reported by the NZ Herald, suggest that natural explanations—like the wake of a recreational vessel under calm conditions—may account for these phenomena (NZ Herald, 2014). But the discussion does not end with New Zealand. Footage from a fishing boat near Greece has shown a colossal shape moving beneath the waves, and even killer whales—long considered the apex predators of the ocean—have been seen fleeing toward the shore. Such behavior, which is atypical for these creatures, invites probing questions: Could these animals be reacting to a force they sense deep below? Or might there be an unknown environmental factor at play?
Similarly, in India, reports of 700,000 turtles emerging on the shore have left many to wonder if a natural disruption or something far more significant is unfolding.
The conversation around marine anomalies extends to the oarfish—a rare deepwater species sometimes referred to as the "earthquake fish" or "messenger from the sea god's palace" in Japanese folklore. With its long, ribbon-like body that can grow up to 36 feet and distinctive silver coloration, the oarfish typically dwells at depths of 3,300 feet. Recent sightings have sparked interest: in July 2023, divers captured rare footage of a live oarfish swimming in shallow waters off Okinawa, Japan (Newsweek, 2023).
More recently, the appearance of an oarfish in February 2025 on Playa Quemada beach in Lanzarote, one of Spain's Canary Islands, has heightened concerns about potential seismic activity, with locals referring to it as the "Doomsday fish" (Economic Times, 2025). Similar concerns arose after this rare oarfish, known as the "doomsday fish," was spotted in shallow waters off Baja California Sur, Mexico in February 2025, drawing crowds of onlookers and prompting discussions about its prophetic significance (Yahoo News, 2025; News Week, 2025). Japanese folklore connects oarfish appearances to impending earthquakes—a belief that gained attention after multiple sightings preceded the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. While scientific evidence for these connections remains inconclusive, such unusual appearances feed into broader discussions about natural warning systems.
Adding further mystery is a recent report from Australia, where a group of 150 killer whales was found stranded on the beach, their behavior erratic and inexplicable (Reuters, 2025). In Tasmania, false killer whales were similarly stranded, and wildlife officials struggled to refloat them amid rough ocean conditions (Reuters, 2025).
Could these mass strandings be connected to a disturbance deep in the ocean—a disturbance that even the ocean’s apex predators can sense? Such questions invite deep reflection about the natural order and the signs that might be foretelling a greater upheaval (Reuters, 2025).
All of these events occur following the appearance of the barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma) – a remarkable deep‑sea species with a transparent head and tubular eyes that was first extensively documented in 2009.
This unusual creature typically lives at depths between 2,000–2,600 feet (600–800 meters) in the Pacific Ocean. What makes this fish extraordinary is its transparent, fluid‑filled shield that covers its head, allowing its tubular, highly sensitive eyes to collect light while being protected. These specialized eyes can rotate within this transparent dome, giving the fish exceptional visibility in the dark depths (MBARI, 2009, 2021; SCIShow, 2015). The recent sighting of this rare fish washing ashore has alarmed marine biologists, as barreleye fish almost never appear in shallow waters due to their specialized adaptations for deep‑sea pressure and darkness (Live Science, 2023). Could the appearance of this deep‑dwelling species be connected to the “Doomsday fish” phenomenon that some claim foretells massive disasters? Adding an astronomical twist to the prophetic picture is the prediction of a 2026 Supermoon (Royal Museums Greenwich, n.d.)—an event that many believe could trigger significant tidal shifts (NOAA, n.d.), potentially disturbing deep‑sea creatures and awakening ancient forces hidden beneath the waves. Is it mere coincidence that such an astronomical event aligns with other natural and spiritual phenomena? Or could it be part of a divine orchestration that signals the approach of end‑time events (Kee, 2016)?
Further fueling these discussions are global phenomena that resonate with biblical prophecies. The drying up of the Euphrates River, mentioned in Revelation 16:12, and unusual weather patterns—such as deserts witnessing sudden blooms or regions like Saudi Arabia experiencing blizzards—are seen by many as fulfillment of ancient predictions.
In recent years, scientific reports have confirmed that the Euphrates River has been drying up due to a combination of climate change, reduced rainfall, and upstream water management practices (IFLScience, 2023; North Press, 2023). In these turbulent times, when natural laws appear to be shifting, one must ask: Are these signs that the chaotic forces symbolized by Leviathan are reawakening?
On top of these natural phenomena, there are significant events unfolding in the realm of biblical prophecy. Recent reports suggest that Israel has announced the ritual sacrifice of five red heifers—a practice steeped in prophetic significance and linked to the construction of the Third Solomon Temple. According to end-time prophecies found in texts like Daniel 9:27 and 2 Thessalonians 2:4, such events may signal that the conditions for the return of Christ are being prepared. The building of the temple and the sacrificial rites serve as powerful symbols of both judgment and redemption. Do these ritual practices hint at a divine timetable, one that aligns with the global anomalies we observe today?
The confluence of these events—mysterious oceanic phenomena, unprecedented animal behavior, ritual sacrifices in Israel, and astronomical as well as geological disturbances—presents a picture that is as perplexing as it is compelling. For the Christian believer, these signs call for reflection and readiness. The Bible repeatedly instructs us to watch for the signs of the times, as Jesus Himself urged in Matthew 24:42.
